A 74-year-old Wellington man was killed in an auto accident as he walked his two dogs on the sidewalk during the very early hours of Christmas Eve. According to sources at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, John Stermer was pronounced dead on December 24, 2017, at the scene of the accident on Big Blue Trace in Wellington. Officials stated that drug or alcohol use was a likely factor in the accident.
Reckless Disregard
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Jason K. Carter was behind the wheel of a 2014 Ford Mustang going south on Big Blue Trace when he attempted to overtake a 2015 Ford Wrangler driven by Miguel Portillo. Carter crashed into the rear of Portillo’s vehicle, sending the Wrangler directly onto the sidewalk where it struck and killed Stermer and his two dogs. Portillo was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Carter was reported to have incurred only minor injuries in the crash.
